A life-saving helicopter has the ability to access remote areas quickly and is not be affected by traffic congestion. The presence of an Air Ambulance also enables medical personnel to reach areas inaccessible to land vehicles including woods and golf courses.
- In April 2007 the Essex Air Ambulance charity became Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust and is responsible for both the Essex Air Ambulance helicopter emergency medical service and the Herts Air Ambulance.
- In April 2007 Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust established the Herts Air Ambulance Appeal to enable the people of Hertfordshire to begin fundraising for their own life-saving Air Ambulance.
- By April 2008 the County had raised a staggering £250,000 enabling the Charity to begin work on securing an Air Ambulance for Hertfordshire. The Herts Air Ambulance team began work on leasing an aircraft, locating a base from which to operate and recruiting Doctors and Paramedics to work on the helicopter.
- In November 2008 the Herts Air Ambulance was launched. Operating 5 days per week in daylight hours.
- The Charity works in partnership with the East of England Ambulance Service Trust but receives no funding from the National Lottery and relies on the generosity and goodwill of local people and businesses to help generate vital funds.
The aircraft, and the Charity that works to fund it, serves all people of all ages and it is this diverse, passionate and committed community that has made the challenge a reality and enabled the Herts Air Ambulance to take to the skies.
